Man who claimed to have explosives arrested after 8-hour standoff, fire

SEATTLE (AP) — A man who claimed to have explosives when suburban Auburn police came to his Seattle apartment to serve a warrant has been taken into custody after an hours-long standoff.

Fire crews responded Wednesday evening after the man was seen starting a fire in the apartment.

Seattle police Detective Drew Fowler said the man would get a hospital evaluation, then be booked into jail on accusations stemming from the standoff and threats, as well as the original warrant. He was not immediately identified.

Fowler says officers began evacuating other residents at the apartment complex earlier Wednesday after the man declared that he had explosives and would use them to harm his neighbors and police. Bomb detectives, police negotiators and SWAT officers headed to the site.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for an evaluation. Police said he would later be booked into King County Jail on charges stemming from today's threats and standoff, and the original warrant.

The standoff in the Greenwood neighborhood disrupted traffic.
