Commentary: Thank the U.S. Open - but our secret is out!

Let's face it: The secret is coming out.

If the weather forecast is any indication, the stigma of being a gloomy, rainy, depressing outpost in the far corner of our country will be strongly challenged by the massive exposure of the U.S. Open this week.

Chambers Bay - along with its sweeping, stunning views - is playing a starring role in this region's coming-out party. So much for every worry outsiders might have had about a stereotypical washout. Add the fact that it's a premiere outdoor event, playing to a prime-time audience on the East Coast - and any hope of keeping our secret safe is drowning in the Puget Sound.

And that's perfectly fine by me. Because it's about time. Not that I want an influx of outsiders invading the region permanently - but it's another opportunity for all of us to be genuinely proud that this area is getting the credit it so desperately deserves.

In fact, while it took more than a century to finally host a U.S. Open up here, it's fitting that Chambers Bay will be the first. Because this course is a perfect representation of the Pacific Northwest itself: Often overlooked, a total underdog story, and best of all, known for it's uniqueness and diversity. And fittingly, there's even a passive-aggressive nature to this course, quietly dictating play and fiercely punishing bad shots.

So whether you're a golf fan or not, I encourage everyone to embrace the enormity - knowing that our region is taking center stage in one of the biggest sporting events the area has ever hosted.

At the very least, take a minute to read about the 15-year-old kid who qualified and will play alongside the best golfers in the world. Or play fashion police with your friends, trying to find the most atrociously dressed golfer not named Ian Poulter. What I'm saying is - you don't have to love the sport to appreciate the magnitude of this week.

Because, it's ultimately one big celebration of the Puget Sound - being played out along the Puget Sound. And revealing our best-kept secret...is a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
