Aunt of injured Ferndale teen says family 'still in shock' from the tragedy

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- An aunt of teenager Kole Randall said Thursday night the family is "still in shock, trying to process" the fact an SUV slammed into high school students on a sidewalk, killing two of them and injuring two, including Kole.

Lynda Erickson, Kole's aunt, said news of the crash in Ferndale has left them in "shock."

"You know, disbelief," Erickson said. "You know, we are still in shock, trying to process it -- and to hear that two students died at the scene -- it's just all really, really overwhelming."

Struck and killed by the SUV were Shane Ormiston, 18, and Gabriel Anderson, 15. Seriously injured were Kole and Michael Brewster; they are both recovering in hospitals.

Erickson said Kole is a strong kid and they're grateful he survived. But their hearts are heavy for the other families.

"It just takes a second, you know, and five families' lives are changed..."

The driver of the SUV told police he fell asleep at the wheel after getting off work Wednesday, but police say they suspect he might have been impaired. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
