Gunman opens fire in downtown Roy, shattering windows

ROY, Wash. -- Police are searching for a gunman that opened fire in a quiet community of Roy.

For the second time in less than a year, somebody fired bullets into the City Hall building. It first happened last Halloween and then again early Wednesday morning. Nobody was hurt during either shooting.

One window has already been replaced at City Hall but another is still boarded up after someone opened fire with a .22 caliber firearm.

“If the round was fired across the roadway and somebody was passing by, if the building was occupied, it had people inside, it could have been very deadly for them,” said police officer Dan Rozier.

City Hall wasn’t the only building struck by bullets. Down the street at the Steakhouse Saloon, a bullet shattered a window.

Across town at the post office, another window was shot out. Police believe they’re all connected to one shooter.

“We have a person of interest that we are investigating,” Rozier said.

But this isn’t the first time bullets flew in downtown Roy; the same thing happened twice in one day last autumn. Slugs flew all the way through the mayor’s office and left holes in a judge’s robe that had been hanging on the door.

“I think it would be very fair to say that citizens are pretty ticked off about it,” said Mayor Karen Yates.

Police are trying to determine if the shooting last fall is somehow connected to this week’s shooting. Neighbors are just hoping whoever is responsible will come forward and take responsibility.

Police installed surveillance cameras on the city building after last fall’s shooting. Thanks to those cameras, investigators said they have a very good lead on a person of interest and an arrest could come soon.
