Boy injured in gas explosion is improving; community rallies in support

ENUMCLAW, Wash. -- A 10-year-old boy burned after a gas tank exploded near a campsite in Enumclaw is doing better.

The boy suffered burns on 80 percent of his body. His condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.

Beau Ward’s pastor, Greg Daulton, said for the first time since he was admitted to the hospital, he was somewhat awake and responsive Sunday morning. He said it’s a big step for a little boy, who has a whole community pulling for him.

Junior Hornets Football founder Ragan Pierce says on the football field, beau ward is a fighter.

“He’s a tough kid,” he said. “He’ll stick his nose in there, and he’s not scared to tackle.”

It’s the kind of strength he hopes the 10-year old will take off the field and into his hospital room, as he faces perhaps his biggest opponent yet, burn after a gasoline tank exploded near a campfire. It sent Beau and his 9-year old friend Carter Josie to the hospital.

Among those rooting for the two is their church family at Mt. Rainier Christian Center. Its Facebook page has become a place for the congregation can go for updates.

Pastor Daulton said prayers haven’t ceased for the boys since they were hurt. The fence of J.J. Smith Elementary is just one example of the community’s love, so is this Facebook banner being shared around social media saying: “Pray for Beau.”

“Prayers matter a lot and we believe he’s responded so well because of prayer,” said Daulton.

While friend Carter has been released from the hospital, Beau is expected to have a longer recovery ahead. He’s expected to be in the hospital for the next two months. His church wants to give him an incentive for his recovery, so they are planning a trip or a nice gift for Beau.

The church has set up a page to raise donations.
