2 boys seriously injured in gasoline explosion in Enumclaw; one has burns over 80% of body

ENUMCLAW, Wash. -- Two boys aged 9 and 10 who apparently were using gasoline at a campfire were seriously injured in an explosion Friday, with one receiving burns to 80% of his body, authorities said.

Randy Fehr, chief of King County Fire District 28 in Enumclaw, said just before 4:30 p.m. firefighters responded to the 24900 block of SE 433rd Street for a reported explosion.

"Firefighters arrived and found two juvenile males ages 9 and 10 with burn injuries ...  The 10-year-old boy suffered severe burns to 80 percent of his body and was flown to Harborview Medical Center."

Fehr said the 9-year-old boy suffered burns to 8 percent of his body and was treated and transported by the Enumclaw Fire Department to Harborview Medical Center.

"It appears that the boys were using gasoline at a campfire when the accident occurred," Fehr said.

The boys are not related, but are best friends, the King County Sheriff's Office said.

"Just a reminder to parents, children should be supervised around campfires at all times and it is never a good idea to use gasoline to start a fire."
