Baby amazingly escapes injury as SUV smashes through apartment wall, into infant's crib

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Talk about a close call.

Police said a woman learning to drive plowed through an apartment wall and right into the bedroom of a sleeping 9-month-old baby Tuesday morning.

It happened at the Hampton Green Apartments on 148th Avenue Northeast in Bellevue.

“I’d say a very close call,” said Bellevue police officer Seth Tyler.

Police said the 34-year-old driver from Bellevue mistook the gas pedal for the brakes -- and plowed her Toyota SUV right through an apartment wall.

“Her husband was teaching her how to drive,” said Tyler. “I’m told she was a new driver and hadn’t driven very long.”

Investigators said the driver accelerated through a carport support pole, over a curb, across the grass and then smashed into the baby’s bedroom.

The car actually hit and damaged the boy’s crib – all while the child’s parents were in the room next door.

Firefighters checked the baby out and miraculously didn’t find any injuries.

The apartment was torn to shreds, and now the family has to find somewhere else to live -- all because a new driver made a big mistake that could have turned this crash into a tragedy.

“We’re very fortunate here that there were no injuries to the driver as well as the baby inside the building,” Tyler said.

Investigators said they don’t believe drugs and alcohol were involved in the crash and the driver wasn't issued at citation at the scene.
