Suspect in multiple hammer attacks shot by police in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say they have shot and critically wounded a man who was swinging a hammer at an officer in midtown Manhattan.

New York Police Commissioner William Bratton and Deputy Chief William Aubry said Wednesday that the suspect was wanted in four hammer attacks earlier in the week. They say an officer fired four times when the man tried to assault his partner. Two of the shots hit the suspect.

Bratton says the encounter was caught on video. The footage has not yet been released.

Both officers are being treated at a hospital. Their injuries are not serious.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 a.m. blocks from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. According to PIX 11, the man was dressed in blue jeans and dark clothes.

The same man allegedly struck multiple women with the hammer in a series of random attacks beginning Monday.
