Washington man goes on mission to find Reese Witherspoon’s discarded boots, says he found one

CAMAS, Wash. (KPTV) -- A Washington man thinks he found a prop that was discarded during filming of the Reese Witherspoon movie Wild in Oregon's Mount Hood wilderness.

It's one of the most dramatic scenes in the film: Witherspoon's character accidentally sends a hiking boot off a cliff, so she throws the other one into the wilderness in frustration.

That scene sent Chris Kesting into action.

"As soon as I saw that, I said, I know that place. I've been there before," Kesting told KPTV in Portland.

He and a friend set out in early March for 'Tom Dick and Harry Peak' near Mount Hood Ski Bowl in Government Camp.

He thought it was unlikely that the boots were still there, knowing the crew did its best to clean up after filming, but his curiosity led him to search anyway.

"It's a pretty steep cliff down to the bottom and I knew that you couldn't go straight down to where the boot would roll, so I had to climb back around the back side," Kesting said. "So I was down there maybe 15 minutes or so, looking around, and I was just about ready to give up when I saw the red laces of the boot."

Kesting recorded video of what he found: A Danner boot, made in Portland, just like the pair Witherspoon wore during filming in that location in 2013.

He searched for the other boot as well, but gave up after about an hour and a half.

The boot is now prominently on display at Kesting's home in Camas.
