TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A gate has been installed in front of a Tacoma public boat ramp where reports show that at least seven people had died over the past two decades, including one man last month.

The News Tribune in Tacoma reports that a sign on the gate outside the Narrows Marina’s launch reads “No trespassing: Public boat ramp closed.”

Narrows Marina LLC owner Scott Wagner says the boat launch is only available to marina customers. He said marina operators did not feel the boat launch was unsafe.

Last year it was reported that at least eight cars had plunged from the boat ramp in the previous 17 years. Four of 11 people in the cars were killed. Another was left permanently disabled. Three more deaths were discovered after the investigation.

The only thing deadly about this ramp is the idiots who drive down because they don’t luck up from their GPS while driving. From what I heard there is plenty of warning that boat ramp. If you are relying on GPS then turn the radio volume down and GPS volume up. I know the GPS gets it wrong from time to time because of roads that are stacked like off and on ramps and overpasses but look ahead of your car to see where you are going.
So a public ramp gets closed for a few dumb drownings over the past decades and now people may have to pay to use when public Ramps are slim to none. Maybe the state should ban kayaking in the sound since more idiots drowned last year kayaking than on this ramp.

I cannot agree more with Beartex3. It is unbelievable that people cannot take responsibility for themselves. What is the world coming to that they cannot tell that a road that dips down into water in a marina may not be a road. As it is, it’s in a marina not at a race track. Every person that landed in the water should be ticketed and have their license taken away and forced to ride the bus. This is a perfect example of Darwin at its best
