Official: Tacoma police officer fatally shoots armed man

TACOMA - A Tacoma police officer fatally shot an armed man after the man reportedly confronted police outside of a residence. Tacoma police spokesperson Loretta Cool said that police were called to a house in the 3400 block of South Proctor Street around 10 p.m. Sunday for a noise disturbance.

Upon arrival, police observed a man inside the house grab and gun and came outside of the house, where he was shot by one of the responding officers.

Medics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Pierce County Medical Examiner's office identified the man as 48-year-old Stephen Cunningham.

The investigation of the shooting is continuing. The Officer involved is on paid administrative leave as is standard procedure. The Officer is 34 years old and has been employed by the Tacoma Police Department for six years.
