Teen struck, killed by freight train in Silvana

SILVANA, Wash. -- A 17-year-old from Snohomish County was killed when she was struck by a freight train in Silvana.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s office says the girl and two friends were on a trestle bridge above the Stillaguamish River around 3:00 p.m. Saturday when she was struck by a northbound BNSF train.

One of the teens was able to jump from the trestle bridge into the river before the train arrived. The other was able to move out of the way of the oncoming train. The third teen was struck and killed.

BNSF says the train was traveling north from Portland to Vancouver, British Columbia. It was traveling 40 mph and sounded its whistle as it approached the crossing.

Officials said once the train stopped, one of its crew members, who is also a volunteer firefighter, administered CPR but was unsuccessful.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s office is investigating the incident. The teen's identity will not be released until Monday.
