Safety classes planned to reduce injuries for one of the state's most dangerous professions

TUMWATER, Wash. (AP) — State safety regulators say the tree care and pruning industry is one of the most dangerous jobs in Washington.

In an effort to improve worker safety, the Department of Labor and Industries is holding a series of free conferences around the state for companies in this line of work.

Roseann Collins, with the state Workers' Compensation Program, says the goal is to help them find ways to get their job done safely.

Workers are hurt in a variety of ways: they're struck by tree parts and fall from heights. Officials say safety issues are violated on a regular basis. Violations include operating a chain saw one-handed, climbing without being tied in and not wearing protective eyewear.

The free conferences will be held in six statewide locations during May and June.
