Strong earthquake rocks Papua New Guinea, on Pacific 'Ring of Fire'

SYDNEY (AP) — A powerful earthquake has rattled the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 7.5-magnitude quake struck Tuesday about 90 miles south of the town of Kokopo in northeastern Papua New Guinea. The earthquake was 6 miles deep.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 186 miles of the epicenter.

Papua New Guinea sits on the Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common.
