Pit bull, litter of puppies found tied in trash bags in Tacoma alley

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Police in Tacoma say someone left a young female pit bull and her litter of newborn pups tied in trash bags in an alley. The adult dog and nine of the 11 puppies were dead.

The News Tribune reports the two surviving puppies are being cared for by the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County.

Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said someone spotted the animals around 1 p.m. Thursday near Pacific Avenue & South 40th Street and called 911.

The puppies were double-bagged in one bunch, in clear plastic trash bags, next to the mother tied up the same way.

Cool says the year-old adult dog had no obvious trauma signs. Police think she died within a day of having the litter, and that someone threw out the puppies with her. They were about 2 or 3 days old.

It's not clear when the animals were dumped. Cool says all the puppies were alive at one point and could have been taken to the Humane Society.
