Snohomish County officers create task force to address rise in property crimes

EVERETT -- Detectives in Snohomish County say property crimes, like burglaries and car prowls, are on the rise.

They know those types of crimes have a significant effect on the community. That’s why they say they are committed to stopping them.

“He came in through the window,” says Cindy Frederickson, as she pointed out the place where a thief broke into her floral shop late Sunday night. He ransacked her counters and stole her cash register and point of sale machines.

“It was brand new computer equipment that had been replaced after we had been victimized last time.”

She says just a year ago an arsonist damaged Everett Floral. After that, she installed a surveillance system and changed the hours of her employees.

“I think we try to be really aware of what we can do to be safe, to have good lighting.”

So she says it’s frustrating to have something like this happen again.

But break-ins are on the rise in Snohomish County.

Police say homes, businesses and cars are all being targeted, because of the rise in heroin use.

“We’re noticing the burglaries, property crimes are much higher because of this epidemic,” says Marysville Police Sgt. James Maple.

But police departments and the sheriff’s office are now combining their resources to go after repeat burglars, car prowlers and property thieves.

Earlier this year, they formed the North Snohomish County Property Crimes Unit. They want residents to know they care about solving these kinds of crimes.

“It is not a low priority,” says Sgt. Maple. “We’re putting resources to it, we’re putting time and we’re committed to making a difference.”

Cindy is happy to hear that, and hopes police will be able to identify and catch the thief caught on her surveillance system. In the meantime, she’s also putting his picture out on social media.

“My husband and I thought let’s take advantage of this opportunity and see if our Facebook friends might be able to help us this time.”

If you recognize the suspect, you’re asked to call Everett police.
