Man dead, other in jail following hitchhiker's robbery

TONASKET, Wash. (AP) — The Okanogan County Sheriff's Office says one man is dead and another is jailed after they allegedly robbed a hitchhiker on Highway 20 near Tonasket.

The office says 28-year-old William Dick, of Grand Coulee, stopped breathing and died after he was taken into custody Saturday following a chase with the Washington State Patrol and U.S. Forest Service.

A hitchhiker from Sagle, Idaho, told authorities he was robbed after hitching a ride with a woman and two men in a van.

A Forest Service officer later found the suspects and van at a campground, and a chase followed. When the van crashed into a tree, the men took off into the woods. The officers used a Taser on one of the suspects and arrested him. He stopped breathing, and attempts to revive him weren't successful.

The other man, Kyle Cate, was booked into Okanogan County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery.
