Heartbroken parents of 2-year-old boy killed in shooting talk of their loss, anger (VIDEO)

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- The parents of a 2-year-old boy shot to death by an unknown gunman in Bremerton are overwhelmed with grief and anger.

“There are no words to describe what has been taken away,” says Jalisa Lum, the mother of Kaden Lum, the toddler who died in Saturday's shooting.

“You spend all this time bringing your son up, watching him progress,” added Kaden’s father, James Trammell. “Then all of sudden, somebody comes and just takes it all away.”

Jalisa says she and Kaden were sleeping in their mobile home near Bremerton early Saturday morning. She heard gunshots and screams from her roommate, 29-year-old Heather Kelso.

“I grabbed the baby because I didn't know where the gunshots were coming from, and I dove to the ground and held him.”

She says there were more shots, and that she didn’t realize initially that Kaden had been hit.

“I thought he missed, I thought he missed, I thought I was protecting him,” she said. “I thought I was protecting him. I would do anything to go back to protect him better.”

Kaden was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Kelso also died, leaving behind a 4-month-old girl. Investigators have still not named a suspect.

“He took a baby from us, and took the mother of another child,” said Trammell. “What person has the audacity to pull something like that and then run?”

“Whoever did this, he took everything from my insides out,” Lum added. “I want the death penalty for him. And I want to know why, I want to know why he did that to me, to him, I want to know why, why did you do that?”

A candlelight vigil for Kaden will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Island Lake Park in Poulsbo.

A separate vigil for Heather Kelso is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Chico Alliance Church in Bremerton.
