Police search for suspect after woman, toddler killed in overnight shooting

BREMERTON, Wash. – A woman and young child are dead, and a man is seriously injured, after a shooting overnight northeast of Bremerton.

Kitsap County deputies were called to the Kariotus Mobile Home Park, on the 3000 block of NE McWilliams Road, just before 2:20 a.m., according to Sgt. Ken Dickinson with the Sheriff’s Office. When they arrived, they found 29-year-old Heather Kelso and a 2-year-old boy with gunshot wounds. Kelso died at the scene, while the child was taken to Harrison Medical Center for treatment. The child later died at the hospital.

Dickinson later identified the child as Kaden Lum.

A third victim, a man, was able to run from the shooting scene to another home after being shot. Dickinson said that the man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries. Deputies are at Harborview, waiting to talk to the man when he is able.

Dickinson said that Kelso was not the mother of the child who was killed. A third adult, the child's mother, was not injured. She and Kelso  were roommates in the residence. She was interviewed and cleared, with Dickinson saying that she tried to protect her son when the shooting took place.

A neighboring home was hit by errant gunfire, but no injuries were reported there.

Investigators from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, Bremerton Police and the Washington State Patrol are at the shooting scene, and Dickinson says the investigation is in its early stages. There have been no arrests in the shooting, but it is believed the suspect or suspects have left the area. Access in and out of the mobile home park is being restricted as the investigation continues.

The family of Kaden Lum has set up a GoFundMe account to cover funeral expense.  The Family of Heather Kelso has also set up a GoFundMe account.
