SAN JOSE, Calif. — A San Jose police officer was shot and killed Tuesday night while responding to a call of a suicidal man, who apparently ambushed him and other officers with a high-powered rifle, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Officials did not say if anyone else was believed to be injured, the newspaper said.

The Mercury News said San Jose officers were initially called at 6:48 p.m. for reports of a man with a gun threatening to kill himself. As the officers strategically approached the apartment building on Senter Road, they were fired upon without warning, possibly from a balcony. Sources said the shooting suspect was believed to be a man in his 50s who lived in the building.

Multiple armored vehicles were being summoned to the scene from outside agencies, the newspaper said.

Meanwhile, a Wisconsin state trooper was killed Tuesday in an exchange of gunfire with a person who matched the description of a bank robbery suspect, the Associated Press reported. Police said the suspect also was killed.

Fond du Lac police said late Tuesday that the incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. No details were available about the trooper or the suspect.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice, which will be leading the investigation, said it was a “large and comprehensive” process but that it was too early to provide more information.
