Kitsap County woman gets 2 years in parent neglect case

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — A Kitsap County woman has been sentenced to two years in prison in the death of her 97-year-old father.

Renee Nash told a judge in Kitsap Superior Court at her sentencing Monday that she loved her father and should have sought help caring for him.

The Kitsap Sun says she had been charged with second-degree murder by neglect but pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter.

A coroner's investigation found that Harlan Haynes died in March 2014 of malnutrition and dehydration. It also said he was dead two days before his daughter, who lived with him, reported his death.

Nash was Haynes' full-time caregiver and was paid $1,200 a month for her effort.

Deputy Prosecutor Chad Enright said her mental illness was a factor in the case and was reflected in the lesser charge.
