Rainfall breaks record set in 1974

SEATTLE (AP) — The National Weather Service says heavy rainfall broke records across Western Washington on Sunday.

A record set in 1974 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was topped by a whole inch of rain. The new record for the day is 2.20 inches of rainfall. Olympia broke a record set in 1997 with 2.08 inches of rain. Bellingham broke a record set in 1974 with 1.14 inch of rain.

The weather service says Sunday was the third wettest March day in Seattle history. The rainiest days since the weather service began keeping records were March 5 in 1972 and March 10 in 1903, when 2.57 inches of rain fell.
