Group seeks special prosecutor in deadly Pasco police shooting

PASCO, Wash. (AP) — A Hispanic group is calling for a special prosecutor in the case of an unarmed Mexican man who was killed by officers in Washington state after throwing rocks at cars and police.

KNDU reports that a in a letter Tuesday, the Pasco group Consejo Latino asked Franklin County Prosecutor Shawn Sant to step aside and have the state attorney general appoint a special prosecutor.

Sant wasn't in his office early Thursday and didn't immediately return a message there seeking comment.

Consejo Latino says Sant has a conflict of interest because he's appeared at news briefings with the spokesman for a regional police unit investigating the shooting.

If the prosecutor rejects its request, the group says it will ask the governor to intervene.

Consejo Latino also has asked the Justice Department to investigate the Feb. 10 shooting of Antonio Zambrano-Montes, a 35-year-old migrant farmworker.
