3 bodies found in Lewis County house fire, believed to be mother, 2 children

WINLOCK, Wash. (AP) —  Three bodies were recovered from a house destroyed by fire in Winlock Thursday, police said. The three are believed to be the mother and two children.

Lewis County Fire District 15 says a woman and two girls were unable to escape the fire early Thursday in the 800 block of NE First Street, but a man and two boys got out of the 2-story residence.

Firefighters from Winlock, Toledo, Vader and Napavine responded to the fire, along with Winlock police and Lewis County sheriff’s deputies.

“Initial reports from the occupants that had escaped the residence, a male and two male children, were that there were three occupants, a female and two female children, who were not able to escape the residence,” according to a press release from Fire District 15.

According to the release, fire suppression efforts were still underway as of 6 a.m. The fire was contained to the structure of origin.

“An investigation to confirm the information that three persons were not able to escape the fire and the cause and origin of the fire is actively being conducted by the Winlock Police Department and will continue throughout the day,” according to the press release.
