KINGS MILLS, Ohio — A 17-year-old transgendered teen who committed suicide is getting national attention because of a suicide note she wrote online pleading for others to “fix society.”

According to WLWT, Leelah Alcorn, 17, was born Joshua Alcorn. She was hit by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 71 in Ohio on Sunday morning.

Before her death, Leelah wrote a suicide note and posted it on Tumblr.

In the letter, Leelah said she felt “like a girl trapped in a boy’s body” since she was 4-years-old.

She said when she turned 14, she found out about the possibility of being transgender and “cried of happiness.” But when she told her parents, they were “disappointed” and said she was going through a phase.

Leelah said her parents’ unwillingness to accept her and isolation from her friends only fueled her depression.

“The only way I will rest in peace is if one day transgender people aren’t treated the way I was, they’re treated like humans, with valid feelings and human rights.”

She ended by saying, “My death needs to mean something. Fix society. Please.”

Her death has sparked an outcry in the LGBT community and classmates at Kings High School are calling for education and tolerance.

Friends and strangers have taken to Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #LeelahAlcorn to raise awareness of her life and the transgender community.

Shame on the parents for allowing a child to buy into the utter foolishness that it is OK to change yourself to the opposite sex. Clear and unequivocal mental illness, no more and no less.

  • Yep

One Less Dumb Ass Fag, Lesbian, Or Whatever You Want To Call It. Now If All The Others Would Just Follow Suit, The World Would Be A Better Place!

I agree. Society needs to fixed. Anyone who wants to live and be free to be their true selves should not have to endure ostracism, discrimination and abuse. Transgender people have been and continue to be physically attacked and murdered for who they were born. Freedom means freedom to live and breathe and not be kept from being able to work, walk around and just be, as long as the person is not committing any crimes. Let people just be who they are and quit forcing every last person to conform to generalizations. Yes, generalizations exist for a reason. But there are EXCEPTIONS to every rule. Those exceptions are as natural as the rule. Just because you are too lazy to allow for the exceptions shouldn’t mean someone else can’t enjoy life AS one of those exceptions. We lost a valuable person due to this ignorance. RIP someday, I hope.

To progress beyond repeating the same miserable cycles of cruelty and ignorance, humanity needs to realize that a generalization is true only IN GENERAL. Quit thinking in types and think of individuals. We all need to quit with the “blacks are this” and “women are that” garbage. It’s simple minded and we ought to be beyond it by now. She wanted to be herself and be accepted. Yes, accepted. If she was going to be a decent person and conduct herself in an acceptable way, then acceptance is what she deserved. It’s sick to say such hateful words of someone so despondent over the rejection by her family and society that she couldn’t stand to endure it anymore. That said, there isn’t a complete rejection by everyone of gender variant people, so those who are reading this just realize there are places you can work and live where you won’t be attacked or fired for it. It isn’t hopeless, just hard. The folks writing the evil garbage on here about her are part of the problem and are ignorant and lazy. They are not, however, representative of ALL people. Maybe most? But not all.

“The folks writing the evil garbage…about ‘her’…”

This self-absorbed little freak had male ‘nads. His life was not more valuable than normal, healthy kids’. Splat, and good riddance!

What did this young woman ever do to you? Gender variance is just part of the natural variation among humans. Obviously, the gonads don’t determine the gender, they determine the physical sex. Unfortunately, due to narrow lazy people such as you, this person couldn’t get the sex change before the male hormones caused her to develop secondary sex characteristics. How in the world can you be so filled with hatred for someone you never met who didn’t do anything wrong to anyone?! You’ll never figure that out because to do so would require careful thought, courage and honest questioning.
