Portland couple sentenced to 8 years in death of meth-exposed baby

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The parents of a meth-exposed baby who died on the day of her birth pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were sentenced to eight years in prison.

Jamie and Sarah Mangus didn't make statements at their court hearing in Portland on Tuesday.

Sarah Mangus gave birth to the baby named Krystal in a sleeping bag on April 12. The mother had been consuming meth right up until the delivery.

The couple then spent hours roaming the streets of Portland, going to stores and a friend's house. Employees at one store noticed the newborn in distress, and offered to call an ambulance or give them a ride to the hospital. The parents refused help.

Mangus had five children before Krystal -- and all had been taken by the state Department of Human Services.
