Redmond police help citizens secure their homes

REDMOND --Police say burglaries are up and no one is immune.

"If you live in a secure apartment you should be fine but if I had a house I'd be concerned,” Redmond resident Kenny Foster said.

Police say that is a common misconception;  that where you live makes you more likely or less likely to be the victim of burglars. Police say it’s just not true even in Redmond.

"We've actually been hit all over Redmond, particularly in the Education Hill District, the Overlake area as well has been hit pretty hard,” Redmond Police spokesperson Nicole Rogers said.

Police say burglars are entering through unlocked doors and in some cases have broken windows to get inside.

"With a bigger city comes more people and with more people comes more problems,” Redmond resident Christian Lopez said.

The problem is so bad Redmond police are taking a proactive approach to help, not just homeowners, but renters too.

They will come out to your home and do an assessment; showing you things that make your home secure and things that make it vulnerable.

Several police departments and sheriff's offices offer similar programs.

We did a walk through earlier in Bellevue.

"All the exterior doors should be either metal or solid wood. Have strong door hinges on the inside of your door and they should be non-removable. Your locks should be strong and reliable. I recommend deadbolts. Make sure the deadbolt extends at least one inch into the door frame. Keep all your doors and windows locked even if you leave for a five-minute trip to your local store,” Bellevue police spokesperson Carla Iafrate said.

Iafrate says lighting is also important and the most cost-effective way to deter home burglars... Use timers for inside lights and motion sensors for outside lights.

It's one of the best ways to protect your home and property.

A similar program is probably available where you live.

Call your local police department’s non-emergency number and ask to speak to a crime prevention specialist.
