Kshama Sawant charged with disorderly conduct, could face jail time

SEATAC -- Prosecutors have charged Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant with disorderly conduct, according to SeaTac City Attorney Mary Mirante Bartolo.

Police arrested Sawant last month during a minimum wage protest at Alaska Airlines headquarters.

She and three others were charged for blocking the road near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Sawant says it was worth it to fight for the workers. She released the following statement on Wednesday:

“Why do workers face charges when they peacefully campaign for their rights, while corporate criminals go free? Our justice system is broken. As long as their movement continues, I will stand with workers in Sea-Tac."

She faces a maximum of 90 days in jail or a $1,000 fine.
