Suspected DUI driver fleeing police dies in crash into church

BREMERTON -- Police are investigating a high-speed chase that turned deadly early Friday morning after the fleeing driver allegedly missed a turn and slammed into a building.

According to the Bremerton Police Department, an officer attempted to stop a 44-year-old suspected DUI driver around 1:58 a.m. near the 1500 block of Sheridan Road. The driver fled the scene in his 2002 Volvo S80, police said, and a short pursuit ensured.

About a minute after the officer tried to stop the driver, the vehicle missed a stop sign and collided with Iglesia Ni Cristo Church at the end of a T-intersection. The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, died in the crash.

No other information about the driver's name or if he was indeed intoxicated was immediately available.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the death.
