McDonald's recalls 'Hello Kitty'-themed whistles due to choking hazard

WASHINGTON -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Monday that McDonald's is recalling Hello Kitty-themed whistles that can come apart and pose choking hazards to young children.

About 2.3 million of the whistles, manufactured in China, were distributed nationwide in the United Stats from October through the first week of November with "Happy Meals" and "Mighty Kids Meals." There were also 200,000 distributed in Canada.

"McDonald’s has received two reports of children who coughed out pieces of the whistle that they had sucked into their mouths, including one child who received medical attention," the CPSC said on its Facebook page.

Consumers should immediately take the whistle away from children and return it to any McDonald’s for a free replacement toy and either a yogurt tube or a bag of apple slices, the CPSC said.
