Fund set up for Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting victims

MARYSVILLE —A special fund has been set up to benefit the victims of the deadly Marysville-Pilchuck High School shooting. The Marysville Rotary Club’s Education Foundation says donations will be collected at Heritage Bank.

“We take pride in being a part in the community and making a difference. That`s what we stand for,” rotary club member Gayl Spilman said Wednesday.

Spilman added that her organization was contacted by the Marysville School District days after the shooting. School leaders wanted to establish a fund that would give the money directly to student victims.

“The school district is thrilled to have a community partner that we trust so much and has done so much in support of schools," said Rotary Club and Marysville School Board member Tom Albright.

The Rotary Club said five people will be appointed by city leaders to disburse the funds to victims and manage the account.

The Marysville Police Department urged the public to be cautious and do research Tuesday before donating to “special funds” for victims’ families.

“It is very important for the public to know that in situations like these, there are always opportunistic individuals who will look to prey on the sympathies of those who wish to contribute financially to funds set up for victims and their families,” Marysville Police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said.

For those wanting to donate, Lamoureux recommended the Marysville Rotary Club and Heritage Bank special fund.

Three students died from last Friday's shooting, including the gunman, and three others remained hospitalized Wednesday with severe gunshot wounds. Two were listed in critical condition Wednesday and one remained in satisfactory condition.
