(CNN) — A 9-month-old Virginia baby died after she was left alone in her crib for 16 hours while her parents drank, police said.

Prince William Police said Avarice Alexander was put in her crib by her father, Adam Alexander, around 8:30 p.m. on October 4 at the family’s home in Nokesville. The baby rolled onto her stomach immediately, and no one checked on the infant for over 16 hours, authorities said.

Avarice’s mother, Jasmyne Alexander, returned from work to the home she shared with Adam, his mother and sister around 11:30 p.m. Authorities said both parents started drinking, leaving their baby alone in her crib the entire night into the following afternoon.

Jasmyne went to bed around 3 a.m. and Adam stayed up until 9 a.m., authorities said.

When Jasmyne Alexander checked on her daughter the afternoon of October 5, the baby wasn’t responsive, police said. Avarice was declared dead at the scene.

A few hours later, Jasmyne Alexander posted online asking for money to help bury her child, according to CNN affiliate WJLA.

Police said the parents had not taken Avarice to a doctor for the past seven months, even after noticing Avarice had problems breathing.

Jasmyne and Adam Alexander have been charged with felony child neglect. If convicted they could face 10 years in prison.

Police said the investigation into Avarice’s death is ongoing.

HLN reached out to Jasmyne and Adam Alexander for a comment, but calls were not returned.

This does sound an awful lot like SIDS, having been around babies that died that way myself. There really is no excuse for not checking on the baby, did she not have to eat or need changed? It is extremely neglectful, but it does not rise to causing the child’s death imho.

What part of “neglect” do you not understand?? A parent has more than a duty “not to cause the death’ of their child; they have an affirmative duty to PROTECT the child. This is one situation where DOING NOTHING can very well meet the requisite elements for a crime.

The article states the couple did not take the baby to a doctor even though they noticed she had trouble breathing. That is neglect.

Possibly except they knew she had breathing problems and still hadn’t taken her to the dr. in the last 7 months. That is neglectful. Plus not checking on her until the following afternoon.

The sad thing is that even if they had checked on her, she would have already been dead. It said she almost immediately rolled onto her stomach. So although it is bad that they didn’t check on her until the afternoon it wouldn’t have made a difference if they had checked on her in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning. The part that makes it extremely neglectful is that they did not seek medical attention for her breathing problems, I take my kids to the doctor when they have lesser problems than that. For that, they do deserve to go to jail.

How the hell can you not pass judgement!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARE PEOPLE STUPID? These two idiots partied for 16 hours with a child who had breathing problems and did not check on her? OMG??? !! I call this a homocide. Nothing else. People are simply stuipid if they let these two idiots get away with killing a child………….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Manslaughter pure and simple. Not a delibrated murder but so far beyond neglect that manslaughter charge should also be imposed. Anyone that has been around children knows that they do require a bit of care. Simply not changing or feeding an infant that long is neglect. It resulted in death……. Alcohol was involved. That is manslaughter. Spool very sad.

Based on my experience they will call this an addiction or some other BS and not do a thing to defend this child. They will probably have more children. Everyone will make an excuse as to why this happened and maybe have them take some classes. RIP sweet baby! This breaks my heart every time I see these articles.

Thus child should have been checked up on by child protective services. These were obviously incapable parents..what kind of subhuman 70 IQ , sick, vindictive pieces of trash name a human baby “Avarice” lock em up and throw away the key. How bout a referendum vote to chemically and/or surgically castrate these walking, talking, pieces of garbage
