CAUGHT ON TAPE: Troopers turn blind eye, give caravan of speeding officers a pass

SEATTLE — Top state law enforcement officials will face tough questions after audio detailing multiple patrol cars speeding to a conference — and not being pulled over by troopers tasked with stopping speeders — was leaked online.

The audio captured Wednesday details a Washington State Patrol aircraft identifying multiple cars speeding on Highway 2 just outside of Wenatchee. The aircraft relays information to a WSP patrol car on the ground, meant to identify the offender and pull them over to issue a speeding ticket.

However, each time a car is clocked speeding by the plane flying overhead, the patrol car identifies the offending car as another officer on their way to a non-emergency Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) conference.

None of the law enforcement vehicles heard speeding on tape are pulled over, nor the officers driving reprimanded.

“Did I miss a memo today (about speeding),” one of the troopers jokes.

Many of the officers are going more than 20 mph over the speed limit. The pilot even spotted a motorcycle officer weaving in and out of traffic.

In fact, the only speeders on the road appear to be law enforcement officers speeding because they're late for the  noon conference. In the end, the WSP aircraft gives up, saying he's sorry because no one was pulled over.

"We got plenty," the dispatcher says, indicating they just couldn't pull over anyone because they were all fellow officers.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Robert Calkins confirmed the audio in the recording is authentic.

Cops think they are so special.i see them speed through red lights and then turn there sirens off..they speed all the time going to nothing.im sorry you cops late for your afternoon or morning dates are so inportant.something needs to be done.your no better then anyone else.you need to be ticketed cop or not.

It is actually incorrect reporting to say that they were not reprimanded… you don’t know the whole story, you’re just trying to make a story! They ALL in fact were reprimanded upon arrival to their conference! Get off their backs, you don’t complain when they save lives!!

“Please die in a fire”..really Jessica? You don’t have anything remotely intelligent to say? You must be 12 years old or younger. Shouldn’t you be in school right now, or doing homework?

So, your saying we shouldn’t be as hard on them because they save lives. Guess what butter cup, there are other people out that save lives other than cops. They broke the law for no reason other than they were late for a stupid conference. What if someone was hurt? What should be seen from all this. A public apology from the officers who did this should be a start to their punishment. Paying the speeding fine should be the second one and reprimand for their actions should be last. If they are reprimanded, then it should be done publicly to show that something was done.

Yes they may or may not have been given a verbal reprimand. Who would know they were never stopped and were in unmarked cars. I thought they were patrolling the roads for our safety. Last I knew it was just as dangerous or even fatal to be in an accident with an unmarked car or motorcycle. If the highway warranted a speed/safety patrol it should apply to ALL. The officer who let them go should be let go also. He endangered the safety of the public just as if he let a speeder go by ( and he did just they were his buddies )

Kristen…. How much was the fine for the reprimand? No one complains when they save lives. This is complaining about them putting lives in danger for no reason. They are breaking the law. Laws are designed to keep the public safe. If you don’t believe me, ask one of them. Just because they wear a badge and drive a cruiser does not make them immune from the law or at least it shouldn’t. There is a culture of law enforcement sticking together and turning a blind eye to each other. If you don’t believe me, listen to this recording again. The airplane spotter is asked if he would like to land so he can be picked up and taken to the conference to speak to these officers about this. He says’ “no thank you, I wouldn’t be very popular after that”. No one deserves special treatment. I’m sure it’s not all officers either, but there sure seems to be a lot pointed out in this story.

Good job WSP getting national news coverage with your high moral standards and all. These pigs feed off of the productive class, and when they die from their idiotic driving behavior, (the most common way they die), we have to pay for their state funerals too. Don’t go away mad, just go away.

II WAS ISSUED A TICKET BY A NEWYORK TROOPER NEAR BUFFALO.NEWYORK ON I-90.THE MACK TRUCK I WAS DRIVING WAS GOVERNED AT 65 MAXIMUM SPEED.THIS WAS ON A LEVEL INTERSTATE AND HE WROTE ME A TICKET FOR 76! I SENT A LETTER TO JIM KLEPPER WHO WRITES ARTICLES OF INTEREST FOR TRUCKERS IN THE TRUCKER MAGAZINE WITH THE INTENT OF HIM WARNING OTHER TRUCKERS ABOUT THE APPARENT CORRUPTION AND HE SUBMITTED MY LETTER IN THE MAGAZINE SO LOTS OF TRUCKERS WERE WARNED ABOUT THIS.I DID FIGHT THE TICKET BECAUSE I WAS NOT GULITY,AFTER APPEARING IN FRONT OF JUGE WALTER ROOTHS BENCH THE THIRD TIME HE FINALLY DISMISSED THE CASE.EVEN THOUGH I GAVE HIM A PRINTOUT FROM THE MACK DEALER IN RUSH,NEWYORK SHOWING THE TOP SPEED OF 65 HE STILL TRIED TO FINE ME! SO DRIVERS BEWARE.I THANKED THE JUDGE BUT I ALSO ASKED HIM,BEFORE I LEAVE I HAVE EXTRA EXPENESE INCURRED AS A RESULT OF BEING IN COURT FOR 8 HOURS,WHO DO I SEE FOR COMPENSATION? HE LOOKED AT ME RATHER SURPRISED AND SAID,”YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE THAT UP WITH THE NEWYORK STATE POLICE SO I SENT A CERTIFIED LETTER TO THE POST WHERE TROOPER NICK JOHNSON WORKED OUT OF AND TWO MONTHS LATER RECEIVED A CALL FORM HIS SGT REINHART WHO INFORMED ME THEY DON`T COMPENSATE IN THESE SITUATIONS.

WSP love to speed down Interstate 5 towards Seattle constantly. I saw 4 wsp cars one night around midnight racing with eachother towards Seattle with no lights or sirens.. Just racing down the Interstate like they owned the place.. They aren’t held accountable and all they do is steal from the citizens through their illegal ticket writing. Extortionists

  • chewybacca

I’m so sure this isn’t a cultural thing within WSP, and I am so sure this is the first time any of them threw their moral duty out in favor of mob ego. I’m so sure.

    • Kathleen

Ahhhh because that’s their job? Isn’t their job to uphold the law? Why arent they given tickets, having to pay fines and have their insurance jacked like the rest of the people that get pulled over doing more then 20 mph?? That’s what would happen if they pulled you over. No accountability…

    • Beedogz

Problem is they were CAUGHT speeding, but not even pulled over because they are entitled pig thugs with guns and badges. Laws do not pertain to pig thugs with badges and guns. No fine. N0 increase in insurance. No delay on the roadway. Pig thugs with guns walked away scot free once again. “To protect and serve” is long gone. Now it is serve yourself if you have a badge. I used to respect cops, and cops used to respect the public. Those days are gone forever.

I now run a dash cam, and will record the event if I am ever pulled over by pig thugs with guns and badges. I simply no longer trust them.

Note: I have never been arrested and have not received a ticket of any form for 3 decades. That does not change the FACT that most cops these days are corrupt self serving thugs who will violate civil rights every time given a chance.

You pigs need to clean up your filthy barnyard. You have LOST the confidence of the bulk of the public you are SUPPOSED to be serving!

  • Vlaamse Mens

Commentator says “they can’t arbitrarily go back and issue tickets.” Does that apply to citizens caught on speed cameras and red light camera’s ???

  • Dan

So they simply got talked down to like children?
“Fellas, come on, this makes us look bad.”
I wish they treated ME like that, instead of the usual, oh what’s it called—ticket fine.

  • Kristine Ringsrud

One law. One standard of enforcement. That’s how you do “simple fairness”. You don’t let everyone off the hook just because you are unwilling to hold a few accountable, especially if those few are the ones who are sworn to uphold the law for the rest of us.

  • Mack

Too funny… ‘so what’ is the right answer.
I enjoy listening to all of the sheep throwing their little tantrums because the sheep dogs can go outside the fence when they can’t. Just be happy the wolves are afraid and go back to chewing you’re cud.
