WANTED IN PUYALLUP and CHESAPEAKE, Virginia —
Police are concerned a pair of criminals from Virginia may be looking for new targets in Washington state.
They say the father-son team pose as contractors to steal jewelry and precious metals from unsuspecting homeowners. They were last seen trying to pawn some of those stolen goods in Puyallup, but that isn’t the only store they’ve targeted.
When you look at video from Gold and Silver Pawn in Las Vegas, you expect to see the famous faces featured on the reality show “Pawn Stars.”
But police have released surveillance video from the store featuring Nicholas and Matthew Coman. They say the father and son have been committing crimes across the country.
“We’re dealing with a residential burglary, theft of a safe, trafficking in stolen property,” said Puyallup police detective Mike Lusk. “It’s enough to warrant a nationwide warrant.”
Police have tracked the suspects from Maryland to North Carolina to Nevada. Now they believe the two are hiding out in Western Washington.
Last week, police say, Matthew Coman was seen at Ace Pawn and Loan in Puyallup.
“He makes a pawn transaction just like any other ordinary person would do, nothing suspicious is seen.”
But he was selling vintage jewelry taken from a homeowner in Virginia, police say. Store owners say they had no way of knowing the goods were stolen. It was only later that his name raised a red flag.
“That transaction is uploaded to a database, a law enforcement database,” said Lusk. “That’s how we’re able to search for those stolen articles.”
Police don’t know how long the two have been here, but they’re concerned they may be planning their next theft.
“The reason they got into this person’s home was they were contractors, they did a bathroom remodel and came back and burglarized the home. So I think they’re going to use that ruse once again to victimize more people.”
They hope someone will recognize them, before they’re able to commit any more crimes.
Police believe the father and son are in a blue 2003 Chrysler minivan with North Carolina plates CJY-6914. They do have family in the Orting area.
