BELFAIR -- A World War II-era pineapple-style grenade was found and safely removed Tuesday from a Habitat for Humanity dumpster in Mason County, the Washington State Patrol said.

According to the Mason County Sheriff's Office, police were called to a report of what "appeared" to be a grenade found in a dumpster in the 22600 block of State Route 3 around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters called to the scene evacuated buildings and created a perimeter. The object was found in a dumpster near a supply warehouse, sheriff's deputies said.

The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad later confirmed that it was a World War II-era Mark 2 pineapple-style fragmentation grenade, the sheriff's office tweeted.

It's unknown where the grenade came from or how it ended up in the dumpster, the sheriff's office said.

The State Patrol Bomb Squad will be discharging the grenade on Wednesday in a safe area, the sheriff's office said.
