6th-grade teacher accidentally shoots herself in leg with concealed handgun in school

SALT LAKE CITY -- A 6th-grade teacher shot herself in the leg Thursday morning when her concealed handgun somehow discharged while she was in a faculty restroom, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported.

The accidental shooting occurred at Westbrook Elementary School just before 9 a.m. Thursday, before school started, the Tribune said. No students were around at the time, a school official said.

The bullet entered and exited the teacher's leg and she was taken to Intermountain Medical Center, where she was initially listed in good condition and released later Thursday, the Tribune said.

Granite School District police were investigating how the handgun discharged.

Several faculty members went to the restroom after hearing the gunshot and came to her aid.

The teacher has been teaching at that elementary school for 14 years.
