Cops: Street racing could be factor in fatal Marysville crash

MARYSVILLE -- Police believe street racing could be the cause of a fatal overnight accident on Smokey Point Boulevard.

Cops say the victim is a man in his late teens to early twenties and they believe the driver of another car sped away from the scene after the crash.

The cars were traveling northbound when the victim’s blue Honda Accord smashed into a utility pole. Police say the impact killed him almost instantly.

“I know that young people think they’re invincible, but the reality is that speed does kill,” said Marysville police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux. “In this case, this is a classic example.”

The crash closed the roadway for nearly eight hours. All that was left was a busted-up tree and shattered glass littering the ground.

Investigators are on the hunt for a second driver that could have been racing the victim.

“We have spoken to one witness who indicates that there was a race going on prior to the vehicle colliding,” said Lamoureux. “At this point we have one vehicle, we’re looking for a second vehicle.”

Harold Skidmore and his buddy said they walk the stretch of Smokey Point Boulevard daily.

They claim to have watched cars race down the street before – but they’re amazed there haven’t been more accidents.

“I know 18-year-old kids they race and stuff, we all did it when we were younger,” said Skidmore. “When we get older you think, why? Why are you in such a big hurry?”

The Marysville Police Collision Investigation Team are poring over the details, looking to see what other factors may have played a role in the crash.

Investigators are hoping someone will come forward with information that leads to the second driver.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released. He’s scheduled for an autopsy, and a toxicology exam should determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
