Seattle police officers deliver 40 beds to families in need

SEATTLE -- Seattle police are stepping up to make sure kids in the city have a bed of their own.

Trudy McDowell says she was surprised to find out officers would be delivering brand new beds to her home so all of her kids have a place to sleep.

"Unfortunately being a single mother with seven kids, yeah it's kind of hard," she said.

Officer Ryan Gallagher and his partner Jeremy Wade came up with the idea after responding to a routine call last spring.

"We saw two young girls that were sleeping on the floor, really wanted to do something for them, so we went out and actually got them two brand new beds from Ikea on our own, delivered them," said Wade. "And after we did that, saw how excited they were and realized how often we see that situation where there are other families we've come across."

The officers eventually teamed up with Ikea and Saturday, they delivered 40 beds to families in need in Seattle.

"That's what policing is about," Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole said. "Most of policing is about service and providing service to people in need. These are very special officers."

McDowell's kids also got brand new backpacks just in time for the new school year.

"Just to see their eyes light up when we brought the beds in, they got their backpacks -- made my day," O'Toole said.

Seattle police are accepting donations to keep the program going.
