Sheriff's office: Deputy suffered minor injuries when hit by fleeing vehicle

LACEY-- A Thurston County sheriff's deputy was injured by a fleeing vehicle that only came to a stop after deputies deployed spike strips early this morning, police said.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, the deputy pulled over a large flatbed truck around 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 160 block of Nisqually Cut Off Road for a possible felony warrant arrest. The vehicle stopped, and the driver identified himself as a wanted man, officers said.

When the driver was told to step out of his truck, he allegedly started up the vehicle instead and sped off rapidly, hitting the officer with the flatbed truck. Still, the deputy got up and gave chase on Martin Way at speeds of up to 95 mph, officers said.

The deputy received minor bruising and cuts from being hit.

Deputies were able to successfully stop the truck with tactical spikes after a hectic chase near Highway 101 in Olympia, but only after the driver had allegedly slammed into at least one patrol vehicle.

The 50-year-old driver was taken into custody and was booked into Thurston County Jail for suspicion of second-degree assault and eluding.

Officers said the sheriff's office cruiser hit in the chase sustained about $5,000 in damages.
