Man gets 15-30 years for shooting Michigan teen on his porch

DETROIT, Mich -- A Michigan man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 to 30 years in prison for shooting an unarmed woman on his front porch.

A judge also sentenced him to two additional years for possessing a firearm while committing the felony.

Theodore Wafer, 55, was convicted of second-degree murder for the shooting that took place last year.

Authorities said Wafer shot Renisha McBride, 19, in the early morning of November 2, 2013, after she pounded on his front door in Dearborn Heights. She was seeking help after a car accident, prosecutors said.

Wafer said he feared for his life when loud banging startled him awake; he opened his front door and fired a fatal shotgun blast into McBride's face. While Wafer said at trial that he acted in self-defense when he shot McBride, he also said the shooting was accidental.
