Car broadsides Seattle police cruiser as it makes U-turn in street; 11-year-old girl taken to hospital

SEATTLE -- A car broadsided a Seattle police cruiser as it was making a U-turn in the street to get to a  carjacking in West Seattle Monday night.  An 11-year-old female passenger in the car was taken to the hospital, police said, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

An officer responding to the call for help in a carjacking case  made a U-turn at 35 Avenue SW and SW Barton Street, using his lights and sirens and stopping all traffic, the Seattle Police Department said.

The officer had completed his turn when a vehicle broadsided the police car on the passenger side, police said.

Seattle Fire Department medics responded and evaluated the officer, the other driver, and her 11-year-old female passenger.  The girl complained of a headache and nausea and was transported to Harborview Medical Center via ambulance.  The officer was uninjured in the collision.

A Drug Recognition Expert was called to the scene to evaluate the driver who was eventually arrested for driving under the influence, police said.

The carjacking occurred at the Pep Boys at 27014 Avenue South and police spotted the victim's stolen car near 21st Avenue Southwest and Southwest Henderson Street. When police tried to pull over the car, the suspects bailed out and ran off.

The victim's car was recovered.  No one was hurt in the carjacking.

The SPD said the suspects in the carjacking were still at large.

Officers continue to search for the original carjacking suspects. They are described as a mid 30s white male, 6 foot, 180 pounds and unshaven. The second suspect is described as a 30-year-old black male, 6 foot and 180 pounds.
