Man escapes custody with police cruiser, shotgun

Daviess County, MO (KCTV) -- Kansas City police are looking for an emotionally disturbed man, possibly armed with a shotgun, who stole one of their patrol cars.

The Missouri Highway Patrol located the abandoned vehicle about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday near the 75-mile marker on Interstate 35 in Daviess County near Pattonsburg. A shotgun was missing from the car.

Authorities said they used pings from a cell phone inside the police cruiser car to find the vehicle.

Kansas City police said officers responded to 37th and Main streets about 2:15 a.m. on a call involving an emotionally disturbed man, who police identified as 30-year-old Joshua W. Boyd. They did not immediately have information on his criminal history.

During the call, police said, Boyd jumped in the patrol car and drove away at a high rate of speed. Authorities are still investigating how he gained access to the car.

Authorities are currently searching wooded areas and rivers near Pattonsburg to located Boyd.

Sgt. Jake Angle with the Missouri Highway Patrol told KCTV5 News that troopers in Daviess County are asking residents to be on alert.

He urges homeowners to make sure keys are out of their cars, keep houses locked and report anything suspicious.

Boyd, a white male, was last seen wearing a blue shirt and khaki shorts. He is said to be 5'10" tall, 170 pounds and has a mustache and goatee.
