Deion Sanders' Charter School opens without permission

FORT WORTH (KDAF) -- Despite being plagued with problems and losing its charter, classes are back in session at Deion Sanders' Prime Prep Academy in Fort Worth.

But it's a location the Texas Education Agency never approved. It's in a shopping center that's right across the street from an adult-oriented business.

"Despite all the things that are being said in the media, we're excited about this year," Principal Dr. Daniel Johnson said. "We have a new regime, a new set of teachers, a new administrative staff, so we're looking forward to a great year."

Since the location is not approved, however, the school will likely not get state funding.

Regardless, parents and students are still pretty pepped for the first day of school.

"They're going to school today. They're set up with their classes and everything," grandmother Jassical Easter said. "And then when they found out they were in a new facility, they were like 'ooh-wee!' we`re at a new school!"

"The building looks really, really nice, I have nothing bad to say about it," parent Tacarra Walker said. "They're trying to show their effort in keeping the school up and everything, so it's good and it's positive for the kids."

The school received a letter from the TEA on Friday revoking the Fort Worth Campus' charter.

"But I'm not a worry wart," Walker added. "So I just pray and leave it in the Lord's hands, and hopefully everything will work out."

"Again, we're just excited about this year, and we're looking forward to all the things we're going to accomplish, and they're not going to see us coming. How about that?" Johnson said.
