SEATTLE — State Route 99 through downtown Seattle will be closed for the next four days.

The Washington State Department of Transportation closed a large section of State Route 99 — the Alaskan Way Viaduct — Friday night and it won’t reopen until next week.

However, there was a plan in place to help fans leaving the game. Both the South Royal Brougham Way on-ramp northbound and the Columbia Street on-ramp to southbound SR 99 remained open until midnight Friday.

Transportation officials are closing the roadway to work on several major construction and repair projects.

Here’s an outline of the closures and work schedule from WSDOT:

SR 99 corridor

Friday, Aug. 22 – Wednesday, Aug. 27

  • Crews will close both directions of SR 99 between South Spokane Street and Valley Street from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25.
  • Both the South Royal Brougham Way on-ramp to northbound SR 99 and the Columbia Street on-ramp to southbound SR 99 will remain open until midnight Friday.
  • Both directions of SR 99 will remain closed between the south end of the Battery Street Tunnel and Valley Street from 5 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Monday, Aug. 25

  • Crews will close two lanes of northbound SR 99 from South Spokane Street to South Atlantic Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Monday, Aug. 25 to Tuesday, Aug. 26

  • Crews will close two lanes of southbound SR 99 from South Spokane Street to South Atlantic Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.

Wednesday, Aug. 27

  • Crews will close two lanes of northbound SR 99 from South Spokane Street to South Atlantic Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Transportation officials said the closures will cause delays as traffic increases on I-5 and side streets in downtown Seattle.

This extended closure will allow crews to demolish and replace a section of highway at the north end of downtown Seattle.

WSDOT closed SR 99 for more than a week back in October of 2011 to demolish and replace a southern mile of the viaduct.
