Deputy shoots knife-wielding suspect in Parkland, officials say

TACOMA -- Pierce County sheriff's deputies shot a knife-wielding suspect in Parkland Friday night when the suspect came at them, sheriff's detective Sgt. Jerry Bates said.
Deputies first responded to the scene after a series of 9-1-1 calls around 9:00 p.m. at the Woodmark Apartments.
When deputies arrived, the suspect met them at the door with a screwdriver in one hand and a knife in the other, officials said.
The man refused to drop his weapons, rushed a deputy and slashed her uniform, authorities said. Two of the deputies fired.
The 32-year-old man had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, Bates said.
The deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave which is standard protocol in deadly force incidents, he said.
Neither of the two deputies who fired have been in an officer-involved shooting before.
