Neighbor rescues 89-year-old woman from burning home: 'He's kind of a hero'

Valley Regional Fire

AUBURN, Wash. -- A neighbor helped rescue an elderly woman from her burning home Thursday morning.  Family members say 89-year-old Jo-Ann Adams was inside the mobile home when the fire started in the carport and spread to the house.

“When I heard the house was on fire, I said she is not going to get out alive. She’s physically not able,” said John Dawson, son-in-law.

Valley Regional Fire Authority was called to the River Mobile Estates community just before 7 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived, a neighbor had already helped Adams out of the home.

The neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said he saw the smoke and ran to the front door. He then helped walk Adams down the stairs as the home filled with flames.

“Thank him very much, thank him very much, he’s kind of a hero,” said Dawson.

Dawson and his wife live just down the street from his mother-in-law. He took her to the hospital, but said it appears she is just fine.

The house was a total loss and sustained close to $100,000 in damage, according to firefighters.

No word on the exact cause of the fire.
