2-year-old girl dies after falling out 3rd-floor window in north Seattle

SEATTLE -- A 2-year-old girl leaned against the screen of her bedroom window in north Seattle Tuesday night and plunged three floors to the playground below, suffering 'severe' head injuries, Seattle police Capt. Mike Edwards said.  The girl later died, authorities said.

The preliminary indication was that the toddler was in her bedroom of her apartment in the 800 block of NE 88th Street and leaned against the screen of her open window and the screen gave way, Edwards said. "It appears to be accidental," he said.

The girl's mother did not see her fall out the window, but heard it, Edwards said.

"As soon as it happened … the mom immediately ran down, covered the child and called 911," Edwards said.

"At this point we know the injuries are severe," Edwards said, as the child was rushed to Harborview.

The girl fell onto a playground area with soft matting on the concrete. "But again, the height was the most significant in causing the injuries," Edwards said.
