KITTITAS COUNTY -- More than 700 firefighters are working to contain the Snag Canyon fire about 12 miles north of Ellensburg.

The 8,842-acre fire was 25% contained on Saturday, according to fire officials. At least 19 structures including 8 homes have been destroyed.

Crews made progress Friday despite a Red Flag Warning for high winds in the area.

A blasting crew used explosives on the northwest edge of the fire to create a fire line in steep terrain. Officials said the same tactic could be used Saturday if necessary.

Three hot shot crews and dozers are on working to improve fire containment lines.

Nearly a dozen helicopters, including Blackhawks from the Washington National Guard are working the fire.

Officials said lightning sparked the fire on August 2nd.
