Houses evacuated as water and gas main break hits Bellevue

BELLEVUE -- A water and gas main broke early Wednesday morning, closing some area roads in Bellevue and causes seven homeowners to evacuate.

According to the Bellevue Police Department, the line broke shortly before 9 a.m. near the intersection of 38th Street and 146th Avenue. There was no property damage due or injuries yet reported.

Seven homes in the area were evacuated in the 14700 block of SE Allen Road, officials said. As many as 30 homes in the area were without service.

The Bellevue Fire Department and the  Bellevue Transportation Department were on the scene to evaluate the break.  The intersection and other roads were closed as investigators tried to fix the problem.

The cause of the 6-inch water main break is unknown at this time, and crews will be checking the site further for possible causes.

The area was reopened to local traffic around noon after crews were able to stop the leak and begin work on repairs.  The smell of gas in the air is largely gone.
