SEATTLE — It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s… space junk?

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reported a space object 10 square meters in size re-entered the atmosphere and broke up into 76 pieces Monday morning over Washington and Oregon.

According to FEMA, the re-entry occurred around 9:20 a.m. Officials believed the object broke up into smaller pieces that would be burned up in the atmosphere and had little chance of striking the ground.

The Washington State Emergency Operations Officer is monitoring the situation.
